At Cranbrook Primary School we ensure that through our school vision, rules, curriculum and teaching we promote British values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
We believe that we have a duty to prepare our children for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe.
We value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all this, are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to British History.
Key Stage 1 study significant figures and events in British history with particular reference to The Great Fire of London and famous British people. In Key Stage 2 British history includes a local study of our area. Periods studied include Stone Age and Iron Age Man in Year 3, followed by a study of The Roman Invasion of Britain in the Spring Term. The Tudors and the beginning of the Church of England is the Summer Term Topic.
In Year 4 the children focus their learning on The Battle of Britain and Britain’s place in Europe. They visit The Imperial War Museum in the Autumn Term. The British theme is continued in Year 5 through the study of The Vikings and settlements in Britain. British myths and legends and English Poetry are a focus during the term. Year 6 study The Victorians and the impact of this era on Britain. On a day to day basis traditional values are taught within formal SEAL, PSHE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout the school days. Democracy is evident within our school. The children vote for their school council representatives. We are very proud at Cranbrook Primary School as we feel our Cranbrook Values are a true reflection of British Values.
The school celebrates Black History Month each October. This is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the important people from the past, and those who contribute and help our society today. People who have helped to shape our society, and those who have made significant contributions in Sports, The Arts and Politics.
