‘WYSaR’ Mornings Wear Your Slippers and Read
Why is WYSaR important?
Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it is the single most important thing you can do to help your child's education. At Cranbrook we are launching a fun Wysar session so that your child can learn with you, how pleasurable books can be. Here are some things we will do to promote reading in class with parents and carers.
Encouraging early young readers to ‘pretend to read’ a book before he or she can read words by talking about books and making up own stories.
Reading dual-language books if English isn’t the family’s first language. Talking about books and stories, and develop a love for them, in any language.
Read a range of genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, comics, recipe books, classics fairy tales, picture books, pop up books and Big Books.
Sharing topic books that children are interested in – maybe dragons, insects or a certain sports.
Reading books with a friend in class, to the class teddy or Book Troll on a comfy cushion.
Modelling reading a challenging book so they can enjoy listening to a story beyond their level of reading and decoding.
Reading and enacting stories using story props and puppets.
Reading and re-reading favourite stories for fluency, speed, accuracy and expression.
Digging Deeper- asking children questions about what they just read - like what, when, why, where, what do you think, how do you know?
