WHAT IS SAFEGUARDING?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Safeguarding means:

To protect children from being maltreated.

To prevent a child facing impairment of their development or physical or mental health.

To make sure that children are given care in their childhood that’s safe and effective.

To take action to ensure children get the best possible outcomes and life chances.
Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18.

WHAT IS CHILD PROTECTION?
Child Protection is part of safeguarding process, protecting specific children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes the child protection procedures which details how to respond to concerns about a child.

The school pays full regard to DfE guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ September 2021. We ensure that all appropriate measures are applied in relation to everyone who works in the school who is likely to be perceived by the children as a safe and trustworthy adult including e.g. volunteers and staff employed by contractors. Safer recruitment practice includes scrutinising applicants, verifying identity and academic or vocational qualifications, obtaining professional and character references, checking previous employment history and ensuring that a candidate has the health and physical capacity for the job. It also includes undertaking interviews and, where appropriate, ISA and Criminal Records Bureau checks.
OPERATION ENCOMPASS
At Cranbrook Primary School we are working in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and Children's Services to identify and provide appropriate support to pupils who have experienced domestic violence in their household; this scheme is called Operation Encompass.
The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in or witness to a domestic abuse incident. Domestic abuse impacts on children in a number of ways. Children are at increased risk of physical injury during an incident, either by accident or because they attempt to intervene. Even when not directly injured, children are greatly distressed by witnessing the physical and emotional suffering of a parent.
Encompass has been created to highlight this situation. It is the implementation of key partnership working between the police and schools. The aim of sharing information with local schools is to allow 'Key Adults' the opportunity of engaging with the child and to provide access to support that allows them to remain in a safe but secure familiar environment.
In order to achieve this, the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub will share police information of all domestic incidents where one of our pupils has been present, with the Designated Safeguarding Lead(s) (DSL). On receipt of any information, the DSL will decide on the appropriate support the child requires, this should be covert dependent on the needs and wishes of the child. All information sharing and resulting actions will be undertaken in accordance with the Metropolitan Police and MASH Encompass Protocol Data Sharing Agreement. We will record this information and store this information in accordance with the record keeping procedures outlined in our Safeguarding/Child Protection Policy.
At Cranbrook Primary School we want all our children, irrelevant of their context, to feel safe, secure and happy, so that they can voice their feelings and have the resilience to overcome barriers to their learning and become confident, successful and responsible citizens. Our school is committed to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its pupils. We recognise that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse and that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self-worth, to view the world in a positive way or achieve academically. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach in order that we can support all of our pupils.
Online safety is trying to be safe on the internet and is the knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-protection from computer crime in general.
